variety of charts and reports. BK5 works with Windows 3.1 and up with

Cumberland
Family Tree (Shareware $45)
Cumberland Family Tree is a powerful second generation genealogy program
- many features, multi-lingual, easy-to-use! Automatically links names
as they are added to the database. Include 250 events per person, multiple
marriages, scanned photos and documents, sources, stories and more...
Print 31 different reports. Even create your very own indexed family history
book!
The major concept of CFT-Win centers around creating your very own Family
History Book (although the program still maintains the capability of printing
individual reports). The body of your book will likely consist of the
unique "Story" reports, which have the capability of taking
your dry data - such as dates and places - and structuring them into a
delightful readable form. By allowing you to add up to 250 events in a
persons life and attaching notes to those events you can easily create
a full and complete biography on each individual in the database! Imagine
showing ALL major events of a person's life in this fashion: births, church
ordinances, schooling, addresses, immigrations, marriages, occupations,
travels, awards, deaths, burials and any other life event you could think
of!
In addition, you can easily document your data with source notes which
can be end-noted when printing the story reports. The Indexed Book will
keep track of all individuals as you create the book and at the end show
an index of every individual in the book - plus you can print the source
notes which will have been footnoted througout the book.
And if you think the Indexed Book is a wonderful idea, imagine what it
will be like when you add photographs and scanned documents! A wide variety
of Photo reports can also be generated: pedigree charts with photos, descendant
charts with photos, family groups charts and even a photo album

Reunion [US$ 29.95]
FAMILY REUNION ( for WINDOWS )is a feature-rich software
program for the novice to advanced genealogy hobbyist. Designed specifically
for the 32 bit WINDOWS operating system, it includes the graphical user
interface (GUI) that WINDOWS users love and already know how to use. If
you've used WINDOWS, FAMILY REUNION's pull down menus, dialog boxes, accelerator
keys, scroll bars, push buttons, radio controls, check boxes, sizing and
positioning controls, tool bar and help system should already be familiar
to you. If you are new to WINDOWS, our Startup and Installation Guide
and built-in Help System teaches what you need to know to be up and running
in minutes.
The hallmark of FAMILY REUNION is its myriad of wonderful reports !FAMILY
REUNION includes not just one but a variety of ancestor charts (also known
as pedigree charts ), a variety of descendant charts, and a variety of
family group sheets . There is a birthday list, an anniversary list, a
life-span report, a statistical report, and a missing data report. You
can also print address labels for selected relatives in your database.
You can customize your own horizontal and vertical database listings by
defining listing drivers that specify what fields to include, listing
filters to select what records to include (based on the matching criteria
you specify) and listing sortkeys to sequence your output in the order
you want to see it. Simply put, FR's reporting capability is fantastic!
New reports provided with this latest version: " Residences "
(if you ever need a security check, here's a record of every place you've
ever lived), " Education " (next time you need to do a resume'
here's a detailed record of every school you've attended, including dates,
degrees, etc.), " Employment " (next time you fill out a job
application you could attach this report, or simply use it to remember
all of your previous employers, positions, job levels, salaries, why you
left, etc. - an extremely helpful repository of information), and "
Medical Information " (next time you go to the doctor, bring this
report along - an extremely comprehensive medical picture of every illness,
surgery, hospitalization, prescription, immunization, symptom, habit,
mood, outlook, relationship, physician, insurance company, and every other
piece of medical information that you'll probably every need -- it even
tracks your exercise program -- better have one!).
FAMILY REUNION's database tracks l oads of information , including names,
places, and dates of all the standard events. In addition, there are several
user defined fields. You can designate adoptions, divorces and relationships
of all kinds. Each person can have multiple marriages and up to 20 children
. There is plenty of room for research notes and comments, by individual,
as well as on each family group sheet. (There are also several features
designed just for LDS users, such as the LDS Family Group Record and LDS
Pedigree Chart that contain temple ordinance information -- the exact
same forms used in the temple. It also tracks Missions, Priesthood
Ordinations and Line of Authority, and a history of Church Callings, including
dates, places, performed-by, etc.)
The program has been designed for heads-down data entry and includes capabilities
to expedite keying of repetitive data. The Mass Input feature allows you
to view / update several records at once, utilizing full cut and paste
capabilities for rapid repeat entry of duplicate data elements.
Tying relationships together is easy and straightforward using the Person-Family
and Person-Ancestors link windows.
Of course, FAMILY REUNION is GEDCOM compatible. Using GEDCOM, you can
exchange data with friends who have other GEDCOM compatible software programs.
If you are currently using another software package and want to
switch to FAMILY REUNION, use your old program to export your database
into a GEDCOM file and use FAMILY REUNION's GEDCOM import features to
generate your FAMILY REUNION database, without wasting time re-keying
everything. (Note: Most GEDCOM data elements are imported into FAMILY
REUNION, but there are a few exceptions, i.e., specific data elements
that some databases might track that FR doesn't.)
This Windows 95/98/NT/ME/XP/00 release of FAMILY REUNION also adds photo
capability . You can now produce PHOTO FAMILY GROUP SHEETS, FAMILY PHOTOS,
PHOTO ALBUMS, and PHOTO PEDIGREE CHARTS. All you need is access to a scanner
that can export device independent bitmap files (BMP files, the standard
used by the WINDOWS operating system). FAMILY REUNION will do the
rest!

Kinship
Archivist (Shareware $10)
Display your family tree on the internet with Kinship Archivist.
The program attempts to provide a user-friendly method for entering and
changing complex genealogical relationships and information. Additionally,
the program allows for importing/exporting of the GEDCOM standard v.5.5
files and allows for exporting of webpages (HTML files) that are used
on the internet. Each family member has their own web page, and genealogical
information is linked between pages. When these pages are placed on the
World Wide Web, information can be shared with other family members or
genealogists. Web surfers or family members can provide feed-back by selecting
the E-Mail link found at the bottom of each web page and submitting their
information. The program user can then easily update his/her records with
the web surfer's new information.

Kith
and Kin Pro (Shareware $55)
Kith and Kin Pro is a software package for storing, interrogating and
documenting family trees. It features an easy to use graphical interface
and powerful data management tools which makes it ideal for large or small
trees.
Each family tree is stored in a relational database with
a capacity of over 2,000 million records and you can have as many databases
as you like. Kith and Kin Pro uses the powerful SQL (Structured Query
Language) and other search tools to find data in the family tree. Results
from SQL queries can be used to form custom reports or text files for
exporting to other programs such as spreadsheets.
The information which you enter into Kith and Kin Pro is organised into
families. The main screen is a window called the Tree Area which displays
each family as a rectangle. Relationships between families are shown by
link lines. Using the mouse, you can drag and position the family rectangles
within the Tree Area to form any tree layout you desire. The family rectangles
can be used for fast, direct access to data by double-clicking on the
required family. You can zoom in and out of the tree to give you an overview
of the entire tree layout.
Navigating the tree on the screen is made easier by automatically highlighting
related families. You can choose all families descended from a particular
root family, all families containing ancestors of the root or just families
which form a direct line between two families.
The program supports all the usual genealogical information; date and
place of births, christenings, deaths, etc as well as aliases for each
person. You can add extra fields to the person or family records to customise
the database to your own requirements. You can also add pictures and OLE
objects.
Multiple notes can be saved with each person or family. Each note can
be assigned a privacy level which lets you choose later what type of notes
you want printed in reports.
For the serious family historian, Kith and Kin Pro lets you store information
about the documentation you have used in your research. Recording source
documents and repositories lets you go back to re-evaluate your findings
at a later date.
Kith and Kin Pro can display a timeline which displays a chronological
list of events associated with selected families interspersed with notable
events from history. The historical events can be edited and added to
using the TimeGen utility (supplied free with the registered version of
Kith and Kin Pro).
Kith and Kin Pro produces many different types of reports, including drop-line
charts and textual reports. You can select a multitude of options and
choose the fonts you want to use. The program has options enabling you
to produce reports in any language.
You can import and export GEDCOM files to exchange data with other programs.
Kith and Kin Pro will also produce Internet World Wide Web pages so that
you can make your family tree available to the world.
Leaf's of the Familytree
or
L'Soft [price: ?]
L'SOFT presents a family tree by focusing upon
individual member's of the family tree. Each relative generation then
shows lineage related to the family member selected. Therefore, L'SOFT
provides the means to present as many different views of family trees
as is possible and thereby provides a rich broad base from which future
generations should benefit.
L'SOFT manages the dynamic tree structure of all the families within
one family tree and maintains relationships with all family members within
each family and across family trees. In other words, L'SOFT maintains
the many family trees that could result, thus growing as your entire family
contributes material on the research about your family. There are no limits
on the scaleability of the databases.
Any member of the dynamic tree could become the focal point of their respective
family tree.
Therefore, L'SOFT presents a family tree as one family with dynamic restructuring
to present any member's family tree by a click of the mouse on a family
member. And, upon request structures the family tree to present spouse
families.
Because the tree structure is dynamically maintained allowing restructuring
for any family member to become the focal point of the entire family tree
structure, and thereby dynamically moving the tree structure forward or
backward in time to show the immediate family tree for any family member,
or the inheritable estate. Each page of the family tree then represents
one century or five generations. The current Century, beginning with the
focal person descending to Great Grand Children extending out to Great
Great Grand Parents and again descending to Third Cousins Thrice Removed.
In general, the legal theory behind the tree structure is based upon estate
administration. With reference to the law of wills and intestate succession,
inheritance is cut off at great grand children through to third cousins
thrice removed, or one century from the decedent's position within the
family tree. From this persepctive, L'SOFT derives the ability to track
individual family members within a personal view of the entire family
tree.
With the law in mind but not limited to the law, L'SOFT presents a family
tree, showing relationships by century with focus upon any one family
member allowing ancestral progression on to perpetuity, adding a one century
page with the turn of each new century.

ohmiGene
(Freeware, English and French version)
ohmiGene is a software for the creation and the management of genealogical
data. The structure of the base was defined to be in maximal agreement
with the gedcom format. If any context concerning the submission of a
file to the church LDS is absent, are correctly handled (import, manipulation
and export) most of the other contexts: - identities with
their various name pieces (particle, nickname ...), - multiple identities
(main identity and AKA), - events or attributes defined AND personalized,
- All the models of dates, - The relations which admit, besides, reciprocity,
- Possible double (tag ALIA), - etc.. ... IMPORT: GmC format and GEDCOM
format OhmiGene is one of the rare programs which don't massacre a gedcom
in the import. EXPORT: GmC format and GEDCOM format for the totalite or
a part of the genealogy. A genealogy can be published as a WEB SITE. SOME

OnceRemoved
[free. Not an application but a web-service]
OnceRemoved offers a means to graphically record a genealogy
and to share that information (and the task of recording it) with others.
Now admittedly, some typing is still required, but the bulk of describing
who is related to whom is accomplished visually by the so-called "drag
'n drop" mechanism. The other advantage of OnceRemoved is the sharing
of information which is intrinsic to the World Wide Web. This aspect permits
other members of a family (or families, depending on their interest) to
add information and new relationships to branches of a genealogy in which
they are most knowledgeable.
It is still a work-in-progress.
Parents
(Shareware $10)
Parents is an application that was designed to help make collecting and
organizing your genealogy easier. With the help of PARENTS, you will be
able to more easily gather, store, and view information about all of your
ancestors as well as your children and your children's children. PARENTS
allows you to enter and store vital information such as names, birth,
marriage, death dates, places and more. All of this information can then
be easily organized and related together to form your family tree. You
will also be able to print detailed information about any of your ancestors
as well as print an Immediate Family Tree, an entire Ancestral Tree, Descendants
Chart, Family Group Sheet and more...

• support for different languages
• image files of individuals
• the ability to make information on living persons private
Ged2go
[fully functional shareware: $8]
GEDCOMS TO GO, or GED2GO for short, is a program that helps
you prepare a GEDCOM file for public distribution. GED2GO has two primary
functions: (1) living persons are removed from the GEDCOM, and (2) an
estimated birth date range is added to all individuals who lack one. GED2GO
has these features:
GED2GO completely removes the record of a living person, together with
all references to that individual which might occur within another record.
GED2GO automatically determines which individuals are living.
GED2GO adds an estimated birth date range to every individual in the GEDCOM
that lacks a birth date.
In most cases, the only user input required is the filename of the input
and output GEDCOM.
Missing dates are estimated from relatives' data.
All dates, and family relations as distant as necessary, are used to make
estimates.
Standard date modifiers, such as ABT, BEF, AFT, or BET are taken into
account.
Most non-standard date formats are also deciphered.

GED2HTML
[US$20]
Second
link for GED2HTML
GED2HTML is a program that inputs genealogical data in GEDCOM format,
and outputs a collection of HTML files suitable for presentation on the
World Wide Web. The input format it accepts is based on the GEDCOM 5.5
standard. The output produced consists of HTML files containing the individual
data, an index suitable for quickly locating an individual by name, an
auxiliary surname index with links to the first individual with each surname,
and a special index file suitable for use by automatic indexing programs.
. The output is highly configurable. Each data file can contain a single
individual or multiple individuals. Either a hierarchical or a flat index
can be specified. Files can be organized into subdirectories or a flat
collection. In addition, the HTML output is programmable, so that the
format of the HTML files can be changed by the user.
GED2WEB
[Freeware]
Ged2web is program for generating a set of web pages from a GEDCOM file.
The program produces a view for each person consisting of an information
summary including:
• Links to parents.
• Birth date and location.
• Christening date and location
• Baptism date and location
• Occupation.
• Address
• Residence
• Death date and location.
• All standard Gedcom event types (individual and marriage).
• Marriage details with links to spouses and children
• Links to optional Notes
• An optional Ancestor Chart spanning a user set number of generations.
This chart can be created on the main page or a separate page as desired.
• An optional Descendent List spanning a user set number of generations.
This list can be created on the main page or a separate page if desired.
The number of individuals per file can be set by the user to allow a balance
to be set between the number of files generated and the size of each file.
An index of individuals is produced with a user set number of individuals
per index file (again to allow a file sizes to be traded off against number
of files. Each viewable block within a file is followed with links to
the previous and next blocks as well as a set of alphabetic links into
the index.
A list of surnames is produced to link to the index of individuals.
Ged2Web has been used to create my own Family Tree Web Pages. These can
be viewed to give an idea of the output.
No attempt is made to import source information.
Although the program will import more than one GEDCOM file no attempt
is made to perform a merge operation. As a result any people duplicated
across two or more GEDCOM files will result in duplicates in the generated
web pages.
Ged4Web
[Multilingual program. US$ 19.95]
GED4WEB is a Windows® 32bit program (Win95, Win98, NT, XP, ME, and
2000) that exports GEDCOMs, pre-existing genealogy files, to HTML files
(web source format using HyperText Markup Language codes) for publication
on the Internet. GED4WEB was developed when I found while researching
my own family tree, that low cost programs having features such as multiple
output formats, security options, color-coded generations for easy viewing
and more, were not available.

GED2WWW
Second
link for GED2WWW
A free GEDCOM to HTML converter; it takes a genealogy database stored
in GEDCOM format and produces a bunch of web pages from it. I originally
wrote GED2WWW for my own use, but it has since grown to be a fairly powerful
program. Some of GED2WWW's features include:
* Produces very little HTML (can be less than 300 bytes/individual
depending on options selected). Much less HTML than most similar packages.
* Can produce a gendex.txt file suitable for indexing with Gendex
* Supports accented/international characters (ANSEL set)
* Produce portable, standard HTML that is browser independent. The output
of GED2WWW is tested for adherence to standards with weblint before every
release,
* Dates can be hidden for individuals that are (or may be) alive.
* Summary page, index pages, surname page, and data pages produced.
* Dates can be listed with individuals on the index pages.
* User selectable text/background/link colors
* User selectable background images
* Can customize common words and phrases in database and index pages.
This is particularly useful for support of non-English languages.
* Very fast! Benchmarks:
* 6,400 person GEDCOM in 70 seconds on 33MHz 486 w / 20 MB RAM
* 22,000 person GEDCOM in 15 seconds on 150MHz Cyrix 686 w/ 64 MB RAM
* 45,000 person GEDCOM in 20 seconds on 450MHz Celeron (overclocked from
300MHz) w/ 128 MB RAM

This is a database program for holding the names you collect, the relationships
to other people and references to the documentary evidence you keep. In
the language of genealogists, this is a lineage linked database. KinQuest
will hold up to 2 billion names. There is no limit to the number of marriages
per person or the number of children per union. Searches are possible
by first, middle, or last name, or by a number of vital statistics (e.g.
birth place or date). Movement around the database allows jumps to names
of relatives and navigation through an on line ancestor chart. Printed
reports include blank forms for family histories, printed family reports,
ancestor charts and last name master lists. KinQuest runs on MS-DOS (version
3.2 or later) and requires 640K of basic RAM. Printing is Epson compatible
only.
Kinship
Archivist (Shareware $10)

changing complex genealogical relationships and information.

The software includes tools to compose either vertical or horizontal family

Click here to view an example of a genealogical tree, as it appears in

The better view in Netscape Navigatot ver 4.06 or later rather than Internet
Explorer because of the greater reliability of the former in graphics
capabilities (probably due to a bug in the IE code).
How it works:
Using Relatives tools you create family trees and save them in files.
Upload the files on your Internet Provider's server. Upload there Relatives
Java™ applet as well as a special html page that will manage the
applet. Tell everybody the link to that page. That's all! Now everybody
can see your family tree!...
ReplaceEm
(free)
Premiere-quality, freeware string-replacing utility for Windows. At
its core, ReplaceEm is essentially a text search-and-replace program.
However, unlike the search-replace functionality of a standard text editor,
ReplaceEm is designed to operate on multiple files at once. And you need
not only perform one search-replace operation per file -- you can setup
a list of operations to perform. If different groups of files need to
have different operations performed on them, this is no problem either.
You can also specify a backup file for each file processed just incase
the replace operation didn’t do exactly what you wanted.

The
Suffolk System of Recording Family History [Not an application,
but wordprocessor templates. US$ 10]
There are some extremely good genealogy programmes available
today, but they all have one flaw - you must be at your computer to fully
utilise their features.
The Suffolk System of Recording Family History uses a word-processor
to store your data, and, as a result of some "lateral thinking"
by its author, allows you to take ALL your relevant information with you
in an A4 ring binder. Your records are easily edited and updated and utilise
a brilliantly simple, yet incredibly effective, cross-referencing method.
The Suffolk System of Recording Family History is taken from "Family
History the Suffolk Way”, a collection of writings by my late father,
Bill Suffolk, on elementary family history research and the use of a word
processor in recording and indexing the results.
Written 10 years ago, the system he devised and the advice he has to offer
is simply unbeatable, and, although he would have been absolutely amazed
at today’s technology, lends itself perfectly to distribution via
the Internet.
Originally written for the Amstrad PCW series and published in booklet
form, I have updated his work to fit the electronic age and have re-created
his templates for use with MSWord (with an option for other word- processors).
You may already have gathered a large amount of information and could
simply use a better way to store it - I doubt if you will find a better
method than “the Suffolk way”. Not only will all your data
be easily accessible and easily “updateable” within your computer,
you also have – and this is the real power of our way - an extremely
portable system which you can take wherever your research takes you!
(Another minor detail is that our system is also considerably cheaper
than any Family History application! OK, so we don't supply 20 CD-Roms,
but we are simply showing you an excellent, useful - and usable - way
to record the information you have now and will subsequently gather in
your future research.)
Quite simply, our system takes the conventional way of drawing out lines
of descent and turns it on its side! You can display up to 15 generations
– quite legibly! - across a sheet of A4 paper.

Transcript
(Free for private use: donations are welcome)
The author:
" Transcript is a program I made to simplify the transcription of
old genealogical and historical documents but it can be used to transcribe
all digital documents which cannot be transcribed using OCR.
You could for example use it to transcribe the text from an old newspaper,
your diary, handwritten notes or any other documents you have.
I found it very inconvenient that I always needed to switch between my
editor and image viewer to move the digital photograph of my document
to the part I needed to transcribe. Therefore I made Transcript which
shows the image in the upper window and the editor in the lower window.
From within the editor you can move the image window and even skip to
a previous or the next image.
Besides this, there are many other options to manipulate text and image.
It also remembers the position where you were working the last time and
will go back there when starting up the next time.
The editor uses the standard "rich text" format which is supported
by most editors so exchanging documents will be easy.
For more information about the usage of Transcript press F1 when the program
is running or open the file Help.rtf which resides in the program directory".
