GeDStrip [Freeware]
The GeDStrip program creates formatted and indexed HTML web pages from a standard GeDCom (available as an output file from most genealogy database programs).  It excludes all data about living individuals from those pages, as well as all links for the remaining individuals.  It further permits you to choose whether to sort prefixed names (such as van Dyke) by the prefix (van) or by the surname (Dyke).

PRO-GEN is a genealogical program for use on a PC with a harddisk. PRO-GEN can be useful in all facets of genealogical research, from simply assisting you in researching your family up to publishing your familybook.

Kinship Archivist (Shareware $10)
 Display your family tree on the internet with Kinship Archivist. The program attempts to provide a user-friendly method for entering and changing complex genealogical relationships and information. Additionally, the program allows for importing/exporting of the GEDCOM standard v.5.5 files and allows for exporting of webpages (HTML files) that are used on the internet. Each family member has their own web page, and genealogical information is linked between pages. When these pages are placed on the World Wide Web, information can be shared with other family members or genealogists. Web surfers or family members can provide feed-back by selecting the E-Mail link found at the bottom of each web page and submitting their information. Kith and Kin Pro (Shareware $55)
Kith and Kin Pro is a software package for storing, interrogating and documenting family trees. It features an easy to use graphical interface and powerful data management tools which makes it ideal for large or small trees.
Each family tree is stored in a relational database with a capacity of over 2,000 million records and you can have as many databases as you like. Kith and Kin Pro uses the powerful SQL (Structured Query Language) and other search tools to find data in the family tree. Results from SQL queries can be used to form custom reports or text files for exporting to other programs such as spreadsheets.
The information which you enter into Kith and Kin Pro is organised into families. The main screen is a window called the Tree Area which displays each family as a rectangle. Relationships between families are shown by link lines. Using the mouse, you can drag and position the family rectangles within the Tree Area to form any tree layout you desire. The family rectangles can be used for fast, direct access to data by double-clicking on the required family. You can zoom in and out of the tree to give you an overview of the entire tree layout.
Navigating the tree on the screen is made easier by automatically highlighting related families. You can choose all families descended from a particular root family, all families containing ancestors of the root or just families which form a direct line between two families.
The program supports all the usual genealogical information; date and place of births, christenings, deaths, etc as well as aliases for each person. You can add extra fields to the person or family records to customise the database to your own requirements. You can also add pictures and OLE objects.
Multiple notes can be saved with each person or family. Each note can be assigned a privacy level which lets you choose later what type of notes you want printed in reports.
For the serious family historian, Kith and Kin Pro lets you store information about the documentation you have used in your research. Recording source documents and repositories lets you go back to re-evaluate your findings at a later date.
Kith and Kin Pro can display a timeline which displays a chronological list of events associated with selected families interspersed with notable events from history. The historical events can be edited and added to using the TimeGen utility (supplied free with the registered version of Kith and Kin Pro).

Family Matters 97 is now available at version 4.21b (some corrections and fixes - see versions.txt). Unlimited Source Citations allow linking of sources to persons, person events, families, and family events. For web generation, you can now include those photographs in your database, and the picture/person links you have in your database will be included in your web site. Additionally for web generation, there have been significant improvements in the creative control provided. FM97 is a full 32-bit Microsoft Access 97 application (so savvy users can extend FM's capabilities), and is the version you want if you are using Windows 95 or better.

OnceRemoved [free. Not an application but a web-service]
OnceRemoved offers a means to graphically record a genealogy and to share that information (and the task of recording it) with others. Now admittedly, some typing is still required, but the bulk of describing who is related to whom is accomplished visually by the so-called "drag 'n drop" mechanism. The other advantage of OnceRemoved is the sharing of information which is intrinsic to the World Wide Web. This aspect permits other members of a family (or families, depending on their interest) to add information and new relationships to branches of a genealogy in which they are most knowledgeable.

GCFiler [Shareware $15]
A tility program for genealogists who must store or read genealogies that are kept in the GEDCOM file format. GCFiler will take a file in GEDCOM format and convert it to comma-delimited ASCII for importing into spreadsheets and databases. The program will also convert the ASCII file back into GEDCOM format. There is also a simple editor for viewing and changing any file. NOTE: this program does not check the content of any GEDCOM file beyond looking at the required basic GEDCOM structure. GCFiler does not check to see if the data you may have added or deleted conforms to the rules of grammar for GEDCOM files.

GedClean32 [$ 9.95]
A program which automates the task of "cleaning" the personal information about living individuals from a GEDCOM file containing genealogical data. There are 2 versions of this program: a share- and freeware version.

Gedcom Estimator [freeware]
The GEDCOM Estimator is a program that estimates missing dates in a genealogical database (or family tree if you like). It is not a complete genealogy system and will not replace whichever program you are using to keep your genealogy databases today. However, you can use it as an extra tool to estimate missing dates.

Ged2go [fully functional shareware: $8]
GEDCOMS TO GO, or GED2GO for short, is a program that helps you prepare a GEDCOM file for public distribution. GED2GO has two primary functions: (1) living persons are removed from the GEDCOM, and (2) an estimated birth date range is added to all individuals who lack one. GED2GO has these features:
GED2GO completely removes the record of a living person, together with all references to that individual which might occur within another record.
GED2GO automatically determines which individuals are living.
GED2GO adds an estimated birth date range to every individual in the GEDCOM that lacks a birth date.
In most cases, the only user input required is the filename of the input and output GEDCOM.
Missing dates are estimated from relatives' data.
All dates, and family relations as distant as necessary, are used to make estimates.
Standard date modifiers, such as ABT, BEF, AFT, or BET are taken into account.
Most non-standard date formats are also deciphered.

GED2HTML is a program that inputs genealogical data in GEDCOM format, and outputs a collection of HTML files suitable for presentation on the World Wide Web. The input format it accepts is based on the GEDCOM 5.5 standard. The output produced consists of HTML files containing the individual data, an index suitable for quickly locating an individual by name, an auxiliary surname index with links to the first individual with each surname, and a special index file suitable for use by automatic indexing programs. . The output is highly configurable. Each data file can contain a single individual or multiple individuals. Either a hierarchical or a flat index can be specified. Files can be organized into subdirectories or a flat collection. In addition, the HTML output is programmable, so that the format of the HTML files can be changed by the user.

GED2WEB [Freeware]
Ged2web is program for generating a set of web pages from a GEDCOM file.
The program produces a view for each person consisting of an information summary including:
• Links to parents.
• Birth date and location.
• Christening date and location
• Baptism date and location
• Occupation.
• Address
• Residence
• Death date and location.
• All standard Gedcom event types (individual and marriage).
• Marriage details with links to spouses and children
• Links to optional Notes
• An optional Ancestor Chart spanning a user set number of generations. This chart can be created on the main page or a separate page as desired.
• An optional Descendent List spanning a user set number of generations. This list can be created on the main page or a separate page if desired.
The number of individuals per file can be set by the user to allow a balance to be set between the number of files generated and the size of each file.
An index of individuals is produced with a user set number of individuals per index file (again to allow a file sizes to be traded off against number of files. Each viewable block within a file is followed with links to the previous and next blocks as well as a set of alphabetic links into the index.
A list of surnames is produced to link to the index of individuals.
Ged2Web has been used to create my own Family Tree Web Pages. These can be viewed to give an idea of the output.
No attempt is made to import source information.
Although the program will import more than one GEDCOM file no attempt is made to perform a merge operation. As a result any people duplicated across two or more GEDCOM files will result in duplicates in the generated web pages.

Ged4Web [Multilingual program. US$ 19.95]
GED4WEB is a Windows® 32bit program (Win95, Win98, NT, XP, ME, and 2000) that exports GEDCOMs, pre-existing genealogy files, to HTML files (web source format using HyperText Markup Language codes) for publication on the Internet. GED4WEB was developed when I found while researching my own family tree, that low cost programs having features such as multiple output formats, security options, color-coded generations for easy viewing and more, were not available.

The GeDStrip program creates formatted and indexed HTML web pages from a standard GeDCom (available as an output file from most genealogy database programs).  It excludes all data about living individuals from those pages, as well as all links for the remaining individuals.  It further permits you to choose whether to sort prefixed names (such as van Dyke) by the prefix (van) or by the surname (Dyke).

KinQuest [$79]
This is a database program for holding the names you collect, the relationships to other people and references to the documentary evidence you keep. In the language of genealogists, this is a lineage linked database. KinQuest will hold up to 2 billion names. There is no limit to the number of marriages per person or the number of children per union. Searches are possible by first, middle, or last name, or by a number of vital statistics (e.g. birth place or date). Movement around the database allows jumps to names of relatives and navigation through an on line ancestor chart. Printed reports include blank forms for family histories, printed family reports, ancestor charts and last name master lists. KinQuest runs on MS-DOS (version 3.2 or later) and requires 640K of basic RAM. Printing is Epson compatible only.

Kinship Archivist (Shareware $10)
 Display your family tree on the internet with Kinship Archivist. The program attempts to provide a user-friendly method for entering and changing complex genealogical relationships and information. Additionally, the program allows for importing/exporting of the GEDCOM standard v.5.5 files and allows for exporting of webpages (HTML files) that are used on the internet. Each family member has their own web page, and genealogical information is linked between pages. When these pages are placed on the World Wide Web, information can be shared with other family members or genealogists. The Suffolk System of Recording Family History [Not an application, but wordprocessor templates. US$ 10]
There are some extremely good genealogy programmes available today, but they all have one flaw - you must be at your computer to fully utilise their features.
 The Suffolk System of Recording Family History uses a word-processor to store your data, and, as a result of some "lateral thinking" by its author, allows you to take ALL your relevant information with you in an A4 ring binder. Your records are easily edited and updated and utilise a brilliantly simple, yet incredibly effective, cross-referencing method.
The Suffolk System of Recording Family History  is taken from "Family History the Suffolk Way”, a collection of writings by my late father, Bill Suffolk, on elementary family history research and the use of a word processor in recording and indexing the results.  
Written 10 years ago, the system he devised and the advice he has to offer is simply unbeatable, and, although he would have been absolutely amazed at today’s technology, lends itself perfectly to distribution via the Internet.  
Originally written for the Amstrad PCW series and published in booklet form, I have updated his work to fit the electronic age and have re-created his templates for use with MSWord (with an option for other word- processors).  
You may already have gathered a large amount of information and could simply use a better way to store it - I doubt if you will find a better method than “the Suffolk way”. Not only will all your data be easily accessible and easily “updateable” within your computer, you also have – and this is the real power of our way - an extremely portable system which you can take wherever your research takes you!
(Another minor detail is that our system is also considerably cheaper than any Family History application! OK, so we don't supply 20 CD-Roms, but we are simply showing you an excellent, useful - and usable - way to record the information you have now and will subsequently gather in your future research.)  
Quite simply, our system takes the conventional way of drawing out lines of descent and turns it on its side! You can display up to 15 generations – quite legibly! - across a sheet of A4 paper.

I found it very inconvenient that I always needed to switch between my editor and image viewer to move the digital photograph of my document to the part I needed to transcribe. Therefore I made Transcript which shows the image in the upper window and the editor in the lower window.
From within the editor you can move the image window and even skip to a previous or the next image.
Besides this, there are many other options to manipulate text and image. It also remembers the position where you were working the last time and will go back there when starting up the next time.
The editor uses the standard "rich text" format which is supported by most editors so exchanging documents will be easy.
For more information about the usage of Transcript press F1 when the program is running or open the file Help.rtf which resides in the program directory".

OnceRemoved [free. Not an application but a web-service]
OnceRemoved offers a means to graphically record a genealogy and to share that information (and the task of recording it) with others. Now admittedly, some typing is still required, but the bulk of describing who is related to whom is accomplished visually by the so-called "drag 'n drop" mechanism. The other advantage of OnceRemoved is the sharing of information which is intrinsic to the World Wide Web. This aspect permits other members of a family (or families, depending on their interest) to add information and new relationships to branches of a genealogy in which they are most knowledgeable.

SeeGEDCOMX [Shareware $20. Mac OS 7.1 - OS X]
SeeGEDCOMX is a minimalist genealogy program for the Macintosh, started before MacOS X made minimalism fashionable. Originally a browser application for GEDCOM files, it has become a much more general application. You can now use it to create a family history from scratch, to maintain an existing family history stored as a GEDCOM document, or simply to browse your GEDCOM documents and downloads. And I believe it's the only genealogy application with AppleScript support.

Calendar Application
The Calendar application is a free Cocoa application for MacOS X. It acts as a graphical user interface for the Unix cal command. In brief, this command can generate a Gregorian calendar for any year or for any single month in a year. The calendar can be for any year from 1 AD to 9999 AD.
The Calendar application lets you customize the appearance of the calendar output and lets you print it. The source code is available for those interested in MacOS X programming using the Cocoa environment and Project Builder.

A free GEDCOM to HTML converter; it takes a genealogy database stored in GEDCOM format and produces a bunch of web pages from it. I originally wrote GED2WWW for my own use, but it has since grown to be a fairly powerful program. Some of GED2WWW's features include:

The purpose of this application is not to provide a way to fully convert your data to Geneweb but rather to help you in publishing them over the Internet, especially the Geneanet web site.

Sparrowhawk is a GEDCOM-to-HTML conversion program for the Macintosh. It is based on version 2.5a of Gene Stark's GED2HTML program for Windows and UN*X. Given a file in GEDCOM format, Sparrowhawk will create a set of linked HTML documents containing the genealogical information contained in the file. Within the constraints mentioned in the Known problems and limitations section (below), the output from Sparrowhawk is essentially identical to the output of GED2HTML 2.5.

The GEDCOM Estimator is a program that estimates missing dates in a genealogical database (or family tree if you like). It is not a complete genealogy system and will not replace whichever program you are using to keep your genealogy databases today. However, you can use it as an extra tool to estimate missing dates.

Pedigree/Draw 5.1 (Free/$25. Mac System ?)
Pedigree/Draw is a Macintosh application that provides for creation, editing and drawing of pedigrees of human or nonhuman families. The package consists of application, example files, and a User's Guide.
Version 5.1 is configured for a maximum of 2000 records, and requires 3 MB for basic pedigrees, more if pictures are included.
Pedigree images larger than screen size are viewed through a scrolling screen display. The entire pedigree may be reduced to screen size or viewed at intermediate sizes.
An interactive editor is provided for the entry and updating of pedigree records. Records may also be imported from population databases able to generate tab-delimited text (ASCII) files containing the basic individual and parental identifiers, along with an optional amount of biographical information.
Up to 120 characters of text may be stored for each individual, and displayed in formats of 5 x 24, 10 x 12, 15 x 8, 20 x 6, or 30 x 4 (lines x characters per line). Text lines may be displayed as two columns separated by a vertical divider line. Three typefaces and several type sizes are available.
Birth and death dates may be stored for each individual and displayed in one of four formats.
Four attribute symbol palettes are provided, containing over 50 iconographic and textual symbols for the representation of genetic traits, demographic information, etc. Symbol descriptions and codes may be edited and stored; a legend may be printed. Symbols may be assigned differing patterns and colors.
A single symbol may represent more than one individual, and childless couples may be depicted. Marital status may be specified for human data. Gender order of parental symbols may be kept absolute.
A picture may be assigned to an individual to be displayed within the symbol.
Multiple births (twins, triplets etc.) may be identified and represented by special symbols. Sibship birth order may be maintained to a point.
Standard European and North American diagraming conventions, and a mating node graph style are supported. Multiple matings are represented, up to a maximum of 50 for a single individual.
Consanguineous matings are identified and marked; inbreeding coefficients may be displayed.
Pedigree/Draw is designed to work with any printer using the standard Macintosh printing interface. Publication-quality typefaces, and 25% to 400% image size scaling are available. With a fan-fold paper printer such as the HP DesignJet 500, continuous sideways printing of multi-page pedigrees is possible.
Segments of large pedigrees are printed on separate sheets that join precisely to form a display larger than standard paper size.
Output of 20 pages or less may be saved as a PICT file for editing in programs such as MacDraw, or exported using the Clipboard.

premiere Date Calculator (Shareware $11.90)
You can enter dates a wide variety of ways and convert the dates between four different calendars. The Date Calculator supports the Gregorian, Julian, Hebrew, and French Republic calendars.
* You can customize the format for display of dates. By default, dates are formatted as in GEDCOM genealogy files.
* You can calculate the day of the week for any precise date.
* You can enter two dates and calculate the time span between those two dates. Time spans can be displayed as days, years and days, months and days, or years, months and days.
* You can enter any time span and add or subtract it to or from the date.
* You can add or subtract time spans.
* Most date applications expect you to enter precise dates with a day, a month, and a year before they will do conversions or calculations. All features of the Date Calculator can be done on "fuzzy" dates. "Fuzzy" dates are dates with just a month and year or just a year.
* When time spans are calculated between fuzzy dates, the Date Calculator will calculate the maximum and minimum times that could possibly span the information given in the "fuzzy dates" and give the results as a time range.
* When times or time ranges are added or subtracted to or from fuzzy dates, the Date Calculator will calculate the range of dates that could possibly differ from the original date by the entered time span.
* Fuzzy date calculations are often useful to genealogists. For example, if you know someone was born in 1824 and died in NOV 1901, how old were they at death? Using the Date Calculator, you can calculate that the time span between these two dates is "BET 76y, 10m, 2d AND 77y, 10m, 30d". Thus, they were 76 or 77 years old with a greater chance of being 77.
* Adding or subtracting time spans to or from fuzzy dates can also be useful. For example, if you know someone died in NOV 1901 at age 77, when where they born? Using the Date Calculator, you can subtract "BET 77y AND 77y, 364d" from "NOV 1901" and find the possible birth dates as "BET 3 NOV 1823 AND 30 NOV 1824". If you later find out they were born in 1824, then the birth date is narrowed down to NOV 1824 or DEC 1824.
* Many keys (or buttons) are available to help in entry of dates and date ranges.
* Nine memory locations can be used for storing and recalling previous date or time entries.
* Extensive help information with details about each of the four supported calendars is included.
* All date and time calculations can be scripted using AppleScript
* Macintosh genealogy program GEDitCOM has menu commands that open the Date Calculator and insert a date for doing date calculations.

SeeGEDCOMX [$10] [Mac OS8.6 and later and Mac OSX]
SeeGEDCOMX is a Macintosh GEDCOM browser and editor. You can browse your way around a document in a WWW-like way, without having to export your information to HTML, and you can fix errors while browsing, just by clicking and editing. There's a fuller description in the README file.
SeeGEDCOMX can be used to display people in GEDCOM documents, organised by surname, by first name, by their parent's own given names, by place of birth or place or marriage, and by birth date.
SeeGEDCOMX can draw ancestor, descendant and family trees, and these trees are 'live' - they can be clicked to show biographies of any person in the them. You can drag a tree to the desktop or to make a picture file, or you export the people in a tree to a new GEDCOM document.
SeeGEDCOMX can also extract people from the GEDCOM according to year of birth, place of birth, name, or other criteria.
It's fast. It's gradually evolving into a full-featured genealogy application.
And it's quite pretty on MacOS 9 and more pretty on MacOS X - there are screenshots on the developer site.

The Suffolk System of Recording Family History [Not an application, but wordprocessor templates. US$ 10]
There are some extremely good genealogy programmes available today, but they all have one flaw - you must be at your computer to fully utilise their features.
 The Suffolk System of Recording Family History uses a word-processor to store your data, and, as a result of some "lateral thinking" by its author, allows you to take ALL your relevant information with you in an A4 ring binder. Your records are easily edited and updated and utilise a brilliantly simple, yet incredibly effective, cross-referencing method.
The Suffolk System of Recording Family History  is taken from "Family History the Suffolk Way”, a collection of writings by my late father, Bill Suffolk, on elementary family history research and the use of a word processor in recording and indexing the results.  
Written 10 years ago, the system he devised and the advice he has to offer is simply unbeatable, and, although he would have been absolutely amazed at today’s technology, lends itself perfectly to distribution via the Internet.  
Originally written for the Amstrad PCW series and published in booklet form, I have updated his work to fit the electronic age and have re-created his templates for use with MSWord (with an option for other word- processors).  
You may already have gathered a large amount of information and could simply use a better way to store it - I doubt if you will find a better method than “the Suffolk way”. Not only will all your data be easily accessible and easily “updateable” within your computer, you also have – and this is the real power of our way - an extremely portable system which you can take wherever your research takes you!

Quite simply, our system takes the conventional way of drawing out lines of descent and turns it on its side! You can display up to 15 generations – quite legibly! - across a sheet of A4 paper.

General Tools
Not directly genealogy related but yet nice programs which might come in handy:

Books [free. Mac OS X]
Books is a native Cocoa application for Mac OS X that stores, sorts, and searches book collection information. Books is intended to assist book collectors with managing personal collections.

Yapbib [free]
Yapbib Annotated Personal Bibliography. This program allows you to manage your body of literature research, include annotations per author and per literature-entry, organize and categorize the entries for your specific projects, perform queries on the entries, and export contents on the bibliograpy database in BibTex form. Yapbib uses no external database to keep the software small and manageable. It's database is in ASCII form that is easily read into other programs or modified by hand. It also stores a cached copy of each article in PDF format making YapBib your "one-stop-shop to your bibliography!

The Centennia Atlas.  A great program for both Macintosh- and Window users. But, it has a price-tag: $89. To what the program offers the price seems really acceptable and friendly to me.

iMAP. This is an absolute great and easy-to-use tool to find any place on earth within seconds! It's a shareware-program and the price is $15. But for the purpose of searching hamlets, villages and towns all over the world you can still use the unregistered version.

Another good piece of software to quickly locate places on earth, for the Mac is anAtlas. This program is free to use. It is 'donation-shareware': paying $10 would be appreciated.

Library. [MacOSX. $10]
Library is an application that lets you catalog all of your books in a database. It has many features to make cataloging easy. Library's greatest feature, autofill, lets you type in a book's ISBN and with the click of a button, Library will query Amazon behind the scenes and after retrieval, automatically fill in all of the book's information, and even download the cover image for you. <br><br> Library features an intuitive interface to browse and manage your books in. The main book table shows the book's current status, cover, title, author, genre, and rating. Library's "Mark Status" lets you specify whether a book is available to you, lent out, or overdue. And "Bookmark" lets you enter which page you are currently on in a book, removing the need of real bookmarks or "doggy ears." There's also a live filter to find the book you need fast. And, of course, there's a whole wealth of preference options for you to fool with.

A wonderfull note-taking tool for historians. Great, professional freeware application for both Windows and Mac-users!

Sente is a tool for scientists, physicians, and others involved in scientific or other academic research who regularly need to explore, and stay current with, the published literature in their field. Search results typically include abstracts, and they are easily explored and organized within Sente using filters, keywords and an iTunes-like browser interface.

This means that you will learn about important new papers as soon as they appear in any of the databases you search. And they will stay there until you find the time to review them, even if that happens at a time when you do not have an Internet connection

WebPage Translator 1.2 [$10. Can be used unregistered with just some inconveniences]
Available in a number of languages (including Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Russian), this helpful program allows users to translate entire Web pages from one language to another in real time.
WebPage Translator also includes an embedded help guide that will assist users in effectively using the program. Compatible with all computers running Mac OS X, the program does not require installation and takes up a small amount of memory.
