| AlkmaarWaaggebouwTitle: Alkmaar, de Waag Caption: Alkmaar [prov.of Noord-Holland] Waag (=weigh-house) in the old part of the town of Alkmaar. Built in 1390 as a 'Gasthuis' (= guest-house and hospital for the sick, the poor and the homeless ). In 1582 the chapel of the Gasthuis was rebuilt into a 'Waag' and a few years later other parts of the Gasthuis came in use as a meat-hall, a storage-place for market materials and as a guard-house.
